As the rapporteur for the EU AI Act, he played a pivotal role in establishing the world’s first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence.
Voss advocates a European approach that combines innovation with ethical responsibility, seeing regulation not as a barrier, but as a hallmark of quality and trust.
Article Zero: What role do you see for the European Parliament in creating trustworthy artificial intelligence?
Axel Voss: The European Parliament must take a leading role when it comes to building trust in artificial intelligence. We must not leave AI to chance but establish clear rules that protect people and promote innovation. The Parliament is the place where this social compass is set.
Article Zero: What do you consider to be the most important achievement of the AI Act?
Axel Voss: The greatest achievement of the AI Act is its clear risk-based approach. AI is not regulated across the board but according to its impact on people and society. This creates a legal framework that does not slow down innovation but guides it responsibly. At the same time, European values such as transparency, security, and data protection are strengthened.
Article Zero: What message should Europe send internationally with its AI regulation?
Axel Voss: Europe shows that clear rules are not an obstacle to progress but a mark of quality. With the AI Act, we are sending a clear signal: AI must be human-centred, ethical, and safe. Europe is a global pioneer for trustworthy AI.
