AI and the Future of Insurance

The insurance industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation driven by the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Many of these trends have been evolving for years, as insurers and insurtech start-ups have developed a wide range of innovative solutions.

My first encounter with AI in the insurance sector dates back to 2007, shortly after I moved to Austria. At that time, I launched one of the first online insurance comparison platforms, which automatically generated the most suitable and affordable offers based on user input. AI had already begun to change the way insurance products were distributed.

AI has also brought significant technological innovation to claims management.
For decades, various systems have aimed to make claims processes more efficient and less prone to human error.

In 2016, while attending a conference on insurance innovation in Barcelona, I met a start-up that used image recognition to automate car accident assessments.
Its service, designed for auto insurers, could determine — with striking precision — whether an accident was genuine or staged, using nothing more than photos taken on a smartphone.

Given the particular importance of car insurance, which is mandatory in most countries, innovation in this area is especially fascinating.
Telematics and behavior-based pricing models have been present in many markets for years, illustrating how AI continues to reshape the industry from the inside out.

In this context, AI analyzes driving behavior — such as braking patterns, speed, and cornering — through sensors or mobile apps to create an individual risk profile for each driver.

This forms the basis of a pay-as-you-drive model for calculating insurance premiums.
Tesla already offers its own telematics-based auto insurance for customers, using real-time vehicle data to assess driving safety.

Looking ahead to a future of autonomous vehicles, a key question emerges:

Will liability shift from the driver to the manufacturer?
This represents one of the central challenges for the future of both mobility and the insurance industry.

Telematics is just one example of how AI enables automated underwriting and dynamic risk assessment in insurance.

AI allows the use of real-time data across various products. For instance, property insurance can base its pricing on data from IoT devices — such as smoke detectors, smart thermostats, motion sensors, and water-leak monitors.

These smart home systems can detect leaks, issue early warnings of fire or burst pipes, and prevent damage before it occurs.

As a result, customers benefit from greater safety, more accurate pricing, and proactive protection through real-time alerts.

Prevention over compensation — this is one of the most significant paradigm shifts that AI will bring to the insurance world.

By leveraging AI-driven analytics, insurers can recommend or reward preventive actions, thus minimizing the likelihood of damage in the first place.

This trend will not only impact property insurance, but also personal insurance lines such as private pensions and health coverage.

Historical data can be analyzed to identify behavioral patterns and generate insights, offering customers tailored recommendations for healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

At the same time, wearable devices tracking activity, sleep, and heart rate can provide additional data to support preventive care and personalized insurance plans.

The AI-driven transformation of the insurance industry opens immense opportunities for prevention and personalization — yet it equally demands ethical responsibility in handling sensitive data and ensuring fair risk assessment.

The future of insurance will be shaped not only by technology, but also by the values that guide its use.
